The work

The site
A narrow lot in Alcântara, closed on three sides by neighbouring walls. The only open view was the sky.
The response
We put the courtyard in the middle and turned every room towards it. A curved concrete wall on the west side throws a moving shadow across the court from three until sunset, and the kilns sit behind it where the heat does no harm.
Materials
In-situ concrete with a fine sand finish, lioz limestone thresholds, and terracotta floors fired in the client’s own kiln.
